Villa Gabriela Roof Top Garden

This rooftop garden design for a penthouse in Old San Juan, Puerto Rico, transforms an exposed terrace into a private tropical retreat above the city. The design balances privacy, comfort, and lush greenery while respecting the structural limits of the building.

Tropical plantings form natural privacy screens while leaving selective openings that frame views of the colorful streets of Old San Juan. Species were chosen to withstand heat, sun, and coastal conditions, with lightweight soil mixes reducing structural load. An herbal garden was also included, providing fresh ingredients for cooking and naturally repelling insects.

The result is a layered garden within an outdoor living space, where residents enjoy shade, privacy, and greenery while immersed in the surrounding architecture. The design softens the urban setting, blending historic views with tropical character.
