LANDSCAPE FOR PUBLIC SPACES
Río Grande Urban Park
Rio Grande Urban Park transforms a key urban zone into a vibrant green heart of the city. Elevated terraces, curved walking paths, and layered plantings, including native Maga tree (Thespesia grandiflora), guide movement, provide shade, and enhance ecological resilience. Rain gardens throughout the park manage stormwater according to Puerto Rico’s 2-year frequency rainfall of 6 inches per hour, improving biodiversity and reducing runoff.
The park balances active and passive areas, with shaded promenades, seating nodes, and native and ornamental trees that offer tranquility within the urban environment. Curved paths and elevated platforms invite movement, pause, and social interaction, while the southern promenade, lined with canopy trees, buffers pedestrian spaces from traffic.
Highlighted by the culturally significant Maga tree, the park serves as both a recreational space and a celebration of local heritage. Residents and visitors engage with the landscape for daily activity, community gatherings, and cultural connection, creating a welcoming and ecologically resilient urban park that strengthens Rio Grande’s public realm.
