LANDSCAPE FOR PUBLIC SPACES
Plaza Utuado
The redesign of Plaza Utuado presents a vibrant public landscape that celebrates geometry, greenery, and gathering. Anchored by a symmetrical layout, triangular garden beds radiate from the plaza’s center, creating structured green volumes and guiding intuitive pedestrian circulation. Positioned in front of City Hall and the Parroquia San Miguel Arcángel, the plaza serves as a cultural and collective heart of the community.
Each garden bed combines native and ornamental plantings, framed by integrated seating and open-air pathways that invite visitors to pause, reflect, and connect. The tree-lined perimeter softens the plaza’s edges, offering shade, comfort, and a visual rhythm that complements the surrounding streetscape. The green spaces, arranged in a circular layout, establish balance and continuity while highlighting the plaza’s centrality.
Strategically placed seating areas and elevated platforms provide opportunities for social engagement, community events, and everyday activity. The outcome is a functional and symbolic public space that honors the traditional Puerto Rican plaza while reinterpreting it with a renewed ecological and cultural identity.
