Plaza Maunabo

Maunabo’s updated central plaza brings new life to the urban zone by integrating additional vegetation and improving cultural elements in a historically significant community space. The design intent focused on connecting native plantings such as the Sauco Amarillo (Tecoma stans) into the plaza to provide shade, seasonal color, and ecological benefits.

Strategies included combining existing vegetation and sculptures with new installations to enrich the setting. The relocation of the José Gumersindo monument created a more prominent cultural focal point, while flagpoles, a water fountain, a new sculpture, and an art wall strengthened the plaza’s role as a community centerpiece. New plantings of Hemigrafes (Hemigraphis alternata), Ficus Esmeralda (Ficus microcarpa), Jatropha (Jatropha integerrima), and Sauco Amarillo (Tecoma stans) were also introduced to expand canopy cover, support pollinators, mitigate heat, and improve air quality.

The outcome is a functional and aesthetically balanced environment that honors Maunabo’s cultural heritage while advancing its ecological health. The renewed plaza serves as a dynamic gathering space for community engagement, connection, and everyday enjoyment
