LANDSCAPE FOR PUBLIC SPACES

Plaza Isabel II - Vieques

The redesign of Plaza Isabel II introduces simple plant integrations that add greenery to a key public space near the Vieques port. The design intent was to improve ecological performance in the coastal urban setting while creating a more welcoming atmosphere for locals and people arriving to the island.

Strategies included adding new vegetation in tones of white and blue, such as Scaevola (Scaevola taccada), Isabel II (Blanca) (Plumbago auriculata ‘Alba’), Isabel II (Plumbago auriculata), and Frangipani (Plumeria alba). These plantings establish a tropical aesthetic while referencing the blue and white colors of the Vieques flag, adding a cultural detail to the plaza. The inclusion of Isabel II flowers also makes a symbolic connection to the name of the plaza and surrounding zone. The result is a simple but intentional space where vegetation enriches both ecology and the visitor experience, offering a welcoming entry to this tropical paradisiac island.

Overall, the plaza serves both locals and visitors as a point of connection. Its location near the port, dialysis center, bakery, car rental, and other establishments reinforces its role as a vibrant and accessible public space in the heart of Vieques.
