LANDSCAPE FOR PUBLIC SPACES
Plaza Gurabo
This project reimagines the central plaza in the urban zone of Gurabo, Puerto Rico, by introducing greater vegetation and reestablishing a balance between ecological performance and cultural life. The design intent focused on enriching the public realm with native plantings, including the Roble nativo (Tabebuia heterophylla), to strengthen biodiversity, provide shade, and improve urban air quality.
The design strategy combines existing community spaces, such as the domino house and kiosk, into a unified framework that maintains traditional activities and gatherings, while merging in updated green areas. These new landscapes improve stormwater absorption, reduce heat, create pollinator habitat, and bring seasonal color and texture into the heart of town.
The outcome is a multifunctional and aesthetically cohesive public space that honors the town’s cultural identity while expanding ecological value. Today, the plaza supports community connection and daily recreation, serving as a resilient green heart for the urban district.
