LANDSCAPE FOR PUBLIC SPACES
Plaza Cataño
This new design of Cataño’s central plaza introduces vegetation to enrich the urban setting with vibrant pink and purple tones while carefully maintaining existing trees. The design intent emphasized preserving the plaza’s cultural spaces, such as the domino playing area, fountain, stage, and concessionary, while updating its landscape character and shade.
Strategies focused on blending existing vegetation with new plantings to improve both aesthetic quality and ecological performance. Additions such as Dianella / Dianella tasmanica, Frangipani (Plumeria rubra), White Frangipani (Plumeria alba), Café de la India (Murraya paniculata), and Bauhinia (Bauhinia purpurea) contribute seasonal color, fragrance, and shade. In a coastal urban zone, these plantings help reduce heat island effects, improve air quality, support pollinators, and strengthen resilience against salt and wind exposure.
The result is a functional and aesthetically balanced plaza that celebrates Cataño’s cultural life while enhancing its coastal ecology. The space continues to serve as a welcoming gathering ground for community events, recreation, and daily social connection.
