LANDSCAPE FOR PUBLIC SPACES

Rain Gardens - Calle Georgetti, Barceloneta

The proposal for rain gardens along Calle Georgetti in Barceloneta, Puerto Rico, introduces green infrastructure to address urban stormwater challenges. The design establishes a network of rain gardens based on schematic calculations referencing Puerto Rico’s 25 year rainfall frequency of 2.83 inches per hour. While infiltration rate tests were not included in this phase, the plan provides a framework for resilient stormwater strategies adaptable to site-specific conditions.

The rain gardens use vegetation to capture runoff, slow its flow, and filter pollutants through soil and plant roots before replenishing groundwater. Beyond flood control, they support pollinators, increase urban biodiversity, and help cool the surrounding environment.

In Puerto Rico’s tropical climate, rain gardens ease pressure on conventional drainage systems and turn excess water into an ecological resource. They also bring shade and visual appeal to the streetscape, creating healthier, more resilient, and welcoming public spaces for the communities along Calle Georgetti.
